Best route to see Kerala?
I have 2 weeks and am thinking of going: Kochi- Alleppy-Varkala-  Periyar - then maybe Munnar. If possible I would like to use train or bus, but I will take taxi if necessary.
Is this a good route? If so how should I get from Varkala to Periyar? Thanks!

From Rahul - the Kochi-Allepey-Varkala leg all heads South along the coast which can be done by jumping on and off a train or taking buses. It may make sense then to take a taxi from Varkala to Periyar as you cut back north and east across the state and then from Periyar to Munnar, cab might be the best bet. I strongly recommend Munnar as it's quite pristine and very different from the rest of the State as it's in the mountains. There are buses (no train) from Munnar back to Kochi where your friend can fly out of. Overall ppl speak english and all the signs are in english and it's easy to get around - Keralites are the most educated (99% literacy) lot in India (I'm a case in point) and I thought'd rub it in a bit with these northernerns on this thread. I'm putting a good map link below too for your friend btw. http://www.keralaeverything.com/map.htm

Three essentials for India:
GET YOUR VISA ORGANIZED AHEAD OF TIME.  The Embassy wait can be brutal!

A-Z of Adventure Travel Insurance from World Nomads as you will probably get "Delhi Belly."

Hostelworld was a great help for finding cheap, but decent accommodation in India!
