Like the California coast, but hate racial diversity and progressive political views? If so, Orange County is the place for you. The first thought that will come to mind for some readers is how closely the locale compares to how it’s portrayed on television. I can’t answer that question because I don’t watch shitty teen shows.
Geographically, Newport Beach is roughly the midpoint of the Orange County, making it nearly equidistant from Los Angeles and San Diego counties. With only a glance around the city limits, it’s easy to divide Newport Beach into two distinctive parts. There’s areas that were, at one point in time, a quaint little beach town and areas that are a testament to the folly of unregulated commercial development. This can be quite jarring. A walk across one street took me from a picturesque block lined with beautifully landscaped brick and cedar homes into an expanse that I swore must’ve been a wormhole into the commercial sprawl of New Jersey. This duality is also reflected in the coast itself. A bike ride along the oceanfront path will bring you through untouched stretches or breathtaking rocky cliffs and even a nature preserve, but will also include stretches lined by hideous block houses where there’s no escaping the sounds of frat brothers drunkenly cheering their alma maters on.
While this may seem unappealing to some, it actually provides for a great deal of fun. When traveling to other countries, it’s important to place cultural sensitivity above personal likes and dislikes. In Orange County, however, cultural insensitivity is the norm. It’s the best way to fit in with the locals. I’d never scream at a Mexican street vendor for not moving at a New York pace, but somehow it seems okay if it’s a seventeen-year-old driving a Hummer with a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker.
