St Kilda - the place for 24 hour party people
|
Overall Rating (5 awesome - 1 terrible): 5 |
|
| | | GENERAL | Program/company I traveled with: Melbourne is my home city - and St Kilda is the place to be for young, free, single 20/30 somethings | | | | HIGHLIGHTS | Major Activity: Arts & Culture, History, Music, Dining & Drinking, Shopping, Meeting People, Outdoors, Sports | One thing you cannot miss: Watching the sunset over Port Philip Bay. 24 hour bars, liquor stores and supermarkets. There are so many bars tucked away that you could go somewhere different each week of the year. Summer Thursday night markets at St Kilda are a must. | One thing you should avoid: Walking down Carlisle Street alone - a known hooker strip. | I wish someone had told me: Most bars/clubs have cloakrooms so don't freeze your butt off while in transit or queues - take a coat! | Suggested visiting time: I've been here nearly five years and plan to stay. | | | | ACTIVITIES | Next time: Live music gigs and concerts at the Palais, The Prince or The Espy; picnics in the St Kilda Botanical gardens with a bit of bocci, backyard cricket or frisbee; house parties with the friendly locals. | | | | ACCOMODATION | Part of town to stay: For budget conscious, there are many backpacker hostels.
Otherwise I recommend the Cosmo Hotel on Carlise or the Novotel on the Esplanade. | | | | FOOD | Retaurant/local dives/markets: Budget conscious carnivores - Tuesday steak night at the Doulton Bar on Barkly St for the biggest juiciest steaks ever. Vegetarian - Lentil as Anything on Blessington St.
Quality dining - Donovans on Jacka Blvd. | To try: Gourmet cake and pastry shops on Acland Street. | | | | NIGHTLIFE | Local Activity/Cultural Experience: Sunday session at the Espy - get down to the funk n soul grooves of the resident band for 8+ years, Nudist Funk Orchestra. | At night: Dining out anywhere on Acland or Fitzroy Streets then hitting any of the numerous bars for a beer n boogie. | | | | GETTING AROUND | Local transport: Trams will take you to and from the city and all over St Kilda. | | | | SAFETY | Safety Tips: Aside from the seedy hooker strips of Grey and Carlisle Sts, it's mostly safe, but due to party atmosphere, there can be lots of intoxicated people so be aware. |

Three essentials for India:
GET YOUR VISA ORGANIZED AHEAD OF TIME. The Embassy wait can be brutal!
A-Z of Adventure Travel Insurance from World Nomads as you will probably get "Delhi Belly."
Hostelworld was a great help for finding cheap, but decent accommodation in India!
