| Activities & Experiences | Food Want to travel in Spain? Fine. It's a great European destination, and close enough to Morocco that a day trip across the Straights of Gibralter isn't out of the question. On thing though, be prepared to swallow gallons of olive oil with every forkful of asparagus as you dine in the shadow of what was, no doubt, a former mosque turned into a cathedral.
We went via tour group in the summer of '98 from Madrid, through Toledo (renowned for its swords), down to the Costa del Sol town of Torremolinos (a breathatking if somewhat rocky beach). Aside from the road itself, which was quite smooth, the only indicator that one was still in the 20th century were the occasional billboards announcing the next Museo de Jamon, a nation-wide sandwich shop chain and kitsch one-stop (Think Cracker Barrel with a Castilian lisp). Which was, trust me, a welcome distraction from the endless monotany of olive trees - olive trees in the fields, olive trees next to the cattle, olive trees even stretching up the sides of the mountains. And Spanish chefs, proud of their traditional money crop, use it liberally, soaking every thing from rice to paella in the oil. Which is fine, quite tasty actually, but which doesn't necessarily agree with the more prudish stomaches of Americans unaccustomed to the rich local cuisine. So, when in Spain remember one thing, toilets in Spain are often of an older, above-the-head tank design. You may have to pull a rope or push a button. It's not until you get to the tourist hot spots in the Costa del Sol that you see anything resembling an American Standard. |

Three essentials for India:
GET YOUR VISA ORGANIZED AHEAD OF TIME. The Embassy wait can be brutal!
A-Z of Adventure Travel Insurance from World Nomads as you will probably get "Delhi Belly."
Hostelworld was a great help for finding cheap, but decent accommodation in India!
