Overall Rating (5 awesome - 1 terrible): 5 |
|
| | | GENERAL | Program/company I traveled with: On holiday on a backpacking trek around Europe. | | | | HIGHLIGHTS | Major Activity: Arts & Culture, Museums & Galleries, History, Architecture, Historical Sites, Dining & Drinking, White Linen Restaurants, Shopping, Arts & Crafts, Designers, Meeting People, Local Interaction, People Watching, Swimming, Trekking | One thing you cannot miss: Cinque Terra | One thing you should avoid: Staying overnight in Pisa. | I wish someone had told me: Don't travel there with a blond. | Suggested visiting time: 3 weeks each time I went. | | | | ACTIVITIES | Next time: VENICE - Canal ride, coffee breaks, old Jewish Getto. ROME - the historical sites. FLORENCE - the museums - Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, Jewish Temple (very ornate), CINQUE TERRA - the most beautiful place in Italy - you can hike along the cliff edge over looking the Mediterranean between the 5 towns. VERONA - lame town even with the Juliet statue. PISA - only stay an hour to see the leaning tower. SIENNA - really really beautiful, but I hear it has become an unbearable tourist town. CAPRI - very relaxing. swimming in the caves kind of freaked me out. POMPEII - it was really interesting, except for the security guard who wanted to take me on a private tour of the sex drawings. ASSISI - really interesting historical town. | | | | ACCOMODATION | Hotels/hostels/accom: I stayed in hostels. Usually just found them at the train stations. Always people out with information. | | | | FOOD | To try: Well, it's great Italian food and excellent coffee! | | | | GETTING AROUND | Local transport: I recommend taking the train from city to city. Very reliable and relaxing. | My Route: First time I came in on an overnight train from Paris to Venice. Second time on a train from Switzerland. | | | | SAFETY | Safety Tips: I felt safe most of the time, but the more southern I went the sketchier it got especially for a solo woman traveler. |

Three essentials for India:
GET YOUR VISA ORGANIZED AHEAD OF TIME. The Embassy wait can be brutal!
A-Z of Adventure Travel Insurance from World Nomads as you will probably get "Delhi Belly."
Hostelworld was a great help for finding cheap, but decent accommodation in India!
